When I decided to get in the gym and improve my body, I turned to YouTube for advice and exercise info and the bodybuilding community was the Go-To.

My favorite creator was Chris ‘Beastmode’ Jones. He’d post passionate, no BS training videos and vlogs of the natural bodybuilding lifestyle.

Counting calories is paramount

I always noticed he weighed out his food with a scale and tracked calories with MyFitnessPal. And he could cut fat without stress or frustration. He was in control.

He planted the seed in my mind that calories were important for weight-loss and that at some point I had to develop the skill of tracking them if I wanted to have abs.

After a few years in the gym, building up a decent amount of muscle, I was ready to cut the fat and reveal what I had built.

I went on a deep dive of different bodybuilders and their fat burning advice. How they cook, what they buy, what’s their mindset and approach when going on a fat burning phase.

I accumulated the information and applied it to myself. Back and forth trips to the grocery stores, tweaking recipes, and learning how to use a food scale and MyFitnessPal. Had many setbacks and frustrations however I trusted the process and it worked!

Weight loss is not about the food!

Once I realized that burning fat was a result of lowering my calorie intake — and NOT about the type of food I eat — that empowered me to take my love for cooking and start converting my favorite high calorie, fattening meals into low calorie, Fat Burning versions.
